Scary. It has a good amount of points, but these points need to have more of his perspective on the issue, because it seems that his essay is just relaying information to me. Sometimes there are some connections such to executions and football… they do not quite seem to fit logically together…

Honestly, it is a great paper already! The only thing that I think that the paper needs is better transitions in between paragraphs. I was really impressed on how it subtly summarized and analyzed the Hitt essay.

Taylor’s essay is more of an outline, but it is easy to see that she has good points that are in the process of being expanded. It seems that she is going to put a lot of focus on the loss of formality of the wedding ceremony and how weddings are more of a celebration than a ceremony.

Grant is in the process of writing a great paper. He just needs to put more of his perspectives on the issue of weddings in American culture. It is very smoothly written, but with more of his input will really give the essay momentum and some more drive for the reader to continue on.

Kevin is a great writer. He puts out quite a lot of interesting and imposing topics. Not only are his topics great, but they are also put together well. He is very clear when explaining his points, but sometimes too clear in such a way that to expand on a point, he tends to stray off the main topic. This doesn’t happen often, but it would be better if a paper stayed on topic all throughout. After some quick and easy fixes, Kevin will have written a stellar paper!

Our culture is shaped by the rituals that we participate in. When looking at the culture in America, there are many rituals that we participate in. Certain rituals might be more significant than others, but one particular ritual that is extremely significant and exceedingly common in America is the wedding. Over the centuries, millions of Americans have gotten married, and in so doing, have participated in a ritual once considered as a tool to politically or financially bond two families together, but is now viewed as a symbol of love and everlasting commitment. During the last six decades, however, the wedding has once again started to alter slightly with each passing generation. It seems that the American culture today has taken away the significance of the wedding and has warped its symbolism. From a ceremony that symbolized the unbreakable union between man and wife, the wedding has now turned it into an extravagant party to be enjoyed only for a limited time.

Part II: For each of the nine sections in “New Family Forms Are Emerging” (Hite 272-276), write in YOUR OWN WORDS 3-5 sentences in which you get to the gist of that section and then relate it to an association you made from your own experience or observations. In other words, each section will consist of your summary and commentary.
[Introduction]
- Here, the author makes her point by questioning if the traditional family system is still working or if it is becoming obsolete. She then starts to transition by hinting some replacements of the traditional family system. I do not agree that the traditional family system is becoming. It is becoming overpowered by all the different types of family systems around, but that does not mean that it is becoming obsolete.
[The “Democratized” Family]
- In this paragraph, the author relays the reality that families are becoming more and more democratic. This means that there is more and more freedom that is being given to each party of the family. She then commpliments the democritazation of the family. I have not yet seen a democritized family that works. When you give freedom to the husband, wife, and especially the children, there will be no more moral bounderies that prevent chaos.
[Diverse Families Offer Healthy Possibilities]
- The author further supports the idea of a democratized family by countering the traditional “patriarchal” family system. She basically states that the traditional family system is terrorizing the father, the mother, and the children. I think that the opposite is true. I think that the traditional family system is not producing terror. It is providing control and structure to the father, mother, and the children. It promotes moral characteristics, while democracy tends to rid itself of these morals.
[A New Theory of the Family]
-With the information gained from a questionnaire that involved over 3,000 people primarily from Western nations, the author says that many of these people’s families have been pre-imposed by the example set by the “holy family.” Next, the author expresses an interest to digress from such example. I think that the author is taking the “holy family” out of context. The “holy family” was not made to create a standard family system for everyone to follow.
[The Patriarchal Family]
- Here is where the author fully describes the role of each party in the patriarchal family. The father is the leader, the wife is “owned” by her husband, and the children are under their parents. The author also points out that this family system has been created by humans and it can be changed. Also, I believe that humans did not create this family system. I believe that it was divinely created by God. Therefore, I think that we can’t and don’t have the right to change it.
[The Need for Family Love]
- Love is at the center of the family. Without it, there is utter confusion for all, especially for the children. Love can be learned in the family, but the author says that it doesn’t necessarily mean a “nuclear family.” I do agree here that love can be learned outside of the traditional family structure, but I do believe that in a true traditional family system, love can be learned more effectively than all other systems.
[Single-Parent Families]
- The author states that there are some situations where single-parent families can be more effective that a full family system. To some extent, I believe that this is true. If the traditional family system involves abuse, either physical or emotional, I do think that a single-parent family will prove to be the more effective system.
[A Positive Pluralism]
- This paragraph states that people believe that the nuclear family system needs to be changed. I do not think that all people believe that. The author made it sould like it was unanimous to change the traditional family system. It’s not a unanimous vote.
[Promoting Justice]
- For the last paragraph, the author makes a call to unite in order to change the traditional family system. She calls for the purpose of democracy and justice. I INCREDIBLY disagree that by changing the family structure would promote success and let alone justice. The change will produce chaos and low morals for generations.

1) When you’re looking at a web site, how do you decide whether that web site would be suited for citing in a research-based essay for our class?
- There are several effective ways to decide whether a web site would be suited for citing. One way is to check the author or sponsor of the specific web site to see if they are to be considered an authority on the topic you are researching. Also check the URL to see if it is a legitimate web site. Another thing is to check to see if the information on the web site is current by looking for the publishing date or the date it was most recently updated.
2) What does “critical thinking” mean to you in practical terms, that is, as applied to everyday situations?
- Critical thinking can be the effective and realistic analysis of a problem for the purpose of solving it. It means carefully inspecting and evaluating all situations around you. It can also mean the proper manifestation of a much deeper common sense.
3) When you’re analyzing an article, what parts of the text are you looking at and what is it that you’re doing as you read?
- Some parts that we should look at when we analyze an article is the introduction, because that is where it will usually state the overall subject of the following text. We should also look at the overall format, structure, and style of the article to get an idea of its tone. As you read and analyze these aspects, you will be able to effectively construct your own opinions in a more educated way because of a deeper understanding of the article.
4) What does it mean to say that writing is a recursive process? For that matter, how is reading a recursive process as well?
- Describing the writing process as “a recursive process” generally means that it is a process that needs to be repeated again and again before stopping. It is essential for you to return and back-track to see if you made any critical mistakes or where you can expand and enhance certain examples. Reading is also a recursive process because you almost always get more information and understanding of the subject the more you read over what you have already read.
5) Whether you’re working on a formal essay on your own or in a timed-exam situation, how do you make use of the various stages of the writing process?
- For the first ten to fifteen minutes, I will brainstorm a little bit and then freewrite all of the ideas that come into my mind. Then for the next thirty to thrity-five minutes, I will properly organize all my freewritten material into a formal essay form and also check for grammar errors. Finally, for the last five to ten minutes, I will polish what I have written to make it as perfect as much as possible.
6) What’s the difference between a thesis statement and a topic sentence? How is the organization of the essay related to the thesis statement and the topic sentence?
- A thesis statement is a statement made, most of the time, in the first paragraph of an essay that conveys the general agenda of the whole essay. A topic sentence, on the other hand, conveys the general topic of the specific paragraph that it is in.
7) Describe three specific ways to open or close an essay.
- A specific way to open an essay is to have a strong and clear thesis statement. It can be formed by a question or a very strong and factual statement. It can also contain a quote that pertains to the subject of the essay. The same applies when you close an essay.
8) Why are transitional phrases and sentences important to use throughout your essay?
- Transitional phrases and sentences are important because they are the ones that make the whole paper sound smooth and easier to understand. Without these transitions, the paper will sound very choppy and it will potentially confuse the reader because of the seemingly large topic jumps that are made from paragraph to paragraph. These transitions allow each of the different ideas presented in the different paragraphs to smoothly flow and work well with each other.
9) What might you do to achieve an essay that shows clear and precise expression of your ideas and a deliberate organizational structure?
- The first thing that I will do to achieve such an essay is to make sure that the introduction paragraph is as strong and luring as possible. I will make sure that the reader knows exactly what to expect from my essay after he or she finishes reading the introduction. I will also use a lot of transitions at the beginning of some paragraphs or at the end. Finally, I will make sure to restate all of my main topics in order for the reader to remember all that he or she read and then finish with a strong and imposing remark.
10) Why do we use MLA in our essays? What are the two essential components of MLA style?
- MLA is used in our essays to formally cite works that we have used in our essay. The first essential component to MLA essays are text citations. The second essential component is a work cited page.

I have expanded on some parts of my outline. I have also weeded out some sources that seem to get in too deep on what divorce is in order to put more focus on my experiences.
